The following pages are of various builds by some of our members who have written their builds up .and let us share them with everyone.
I am including the wheels of our paddler here as there are a build of their own.
It is written as a short description with links to photos that show the parts, as these show all
the parts. T o view the photos clink the link to wheel gallery at page bottom
The wheels are made of brass, steel, from round and rectangle bar, sheet, tube.
Each wheel consists of the following parts:-
1 brass boss
2 steel plate rims
9 steel rim spacer bars (threaded each end)
9 flat steel bar blades (these are handed left and right)
9 flat brass bar small blade bearings
9 flat brass bar large blade bearings
9 flat brass bar feathering arms
9 steel blade pivot bars (threaded each end)
1 brass bar feathering plate
1 brass and steel inner and outer flanged bearing
36 brass bushes for the rims (press fit together through rim)
18 rivets
Each wheel has its own support for the feathering drive so it is not on the sponsons
2 shaped steel plates
2 steel tubes
2 steel rods (threaded each end)
All the multiple parts were made in batches, various jigs and fixtures were made to keep all parts the same.
The 2 brass bosses were made first these are simple turned with flanges at each end the
smaller inner diameter drilled for 2 holding screws.
Rims were next these being marked out ,chain drilled., filed to shape inner spokes and outer shape also drilled to fit boss and ready for riveting The spacer bars were then turned up all to the same size as the boss over the flanges, the rims were then assembled and riveted up and the spacer bars fastened with nuts loctited
The wheel was then sprayed with 2 coats of undercoat and left to dry full y
The blades were next just saw to length with enough to file back to size, marked out for the slot to miss the feather arm drilled and tapped for the bearings(this was done with a jig)
All the blade bearings are tuned up and threaded the holes for the pivot rod are drilled with a jig to ensure they are all the same height from the blade..Once made these were fitted to the blades. The feathering arms were next again a saw and file operation with a jig for filing to shape and size and for drilling. All the arm bearings and arms are radiused using filing collars
and all these parts polished. At this point each wheel was fully assembled for trial
They were then taken apart and every thing painted with undercoat and gloss enamel.
This may sound too easy but with care can be done by anyone with a lathe an d patience
Honest. See the following page for all the photos, I hope that this is all understandable if any queries or more information is required email
